General information
When areas of the body have been over stressed by prolonged pressure we automatically move position and redistribute the weight. If the patientfalls into a high-risk category and they
o are unable to redistribute their weight successfully a reddening of the skin will
occur followed by a pressure area. If an area becomes warm the cells require more oxygen to metabolise, conversely if the area is too cold the cells will automatically produce less energy In both cases the cells are prone to damage The areas most likely to be affected are those close to the surface - i.e. shoulder blades, elbows, sacrum, hips (pelvis) and heels. Even if not 'at risk', general fatigue and degeneration, particularly in the spinal region, cause the individual to reposition constantly in order to relieve aches and pains of everyday living.
